Do men lose weight faster than women? The truth

Speaking strictly from science men in general tend to lose weight faster than women but there is a catch to this. All bodies are not equal and when we are speaking of the actual reduction of inflammatory fat this can be a whole different story, the key to successful weight loss is the reduction of inflammatory fat; it is this inflammatory fat that causes all the health problems associated with being overweight.  Women and men often have a hard time removing inflammatory fat because most are using the commercial weight loss diets that are not very successful from a scientific perspective.  You don’t lose real fat on commercial television diets.

According to researchers in England who studied men and women that were put on the same commercial diets over 2 months, the men tended to lose more body weight than women at the start but over time things equaled out.  Over 6 months both lost weight equally.


"Women with excess fat around the middle will lose it more or less as readily as men," says upwave review-board member Dr. David Katz, founding director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center at the Yale University School of Medicine. "Men are more prone to gain weight around the middle."

It may seem obvious but we must remember that women and men are not the same; females tend to store fat in different places than men.  Females carry more fat on the hips, thighs and buttocks than a man does; men tend to carry excessive fat mainly on the belly. The study from England made it clear that men have a tendency to lose more weight right from the start but the women had equal weight loss to the men over 6 months. The take home message is that both men and women lost weight at the same speed over time but it is the men who usually lose more at the very start.
